NYPD, Meet Your Inspector General

March 28, 2014 | Andy Cush

Philip Eure, a longtime leader of the Office of Police Complaints in Washington, D.C., will be the first Inspector General of the NYPD. The new office was created after City Council passed the Community Safety Act, legislation designed to increase NYPD oversight, last year.

Eure’s police-regulating bona fides appear to be in line: in D.C., he instituted a program to train officers in dealing with people with mental disorders, and according to the Timeshe “he clashed with the department over its refusal to discipline officers who did not cooperate with his office.”

When asked whether his relationship with NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton should be characterized as a partnership, Eure, encouragingly, said no. “That’s not what this is,” Eure said. “This is an independent oversight entity.”

Eure’s record looks pretty good, but we’ll reserve judgement until we see whether he’s able to stop shit like this from happening after he takes office.
