Twelve. That’s how many days New York City went without a homicide. Sadly, a man was shot in Queens on Friday “just before noon,” reports the New York Times. Earlier that day, NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton appeared on on “CBS This Morning” and when he was asked about the historically low numbers by host Charlie Rose, the city’s top cop may have put a hex on the murder-free stretch of time.
“Shh … we don’t want to jinx it,” said Bratton, foolishly, on Friday the 13th. “We’re into our 12th day now, Charlie. Eleven is a record and let’s keep it going.” Hours later, Eric Roman was gunned down and died the following day, officially ending the streak.
Hopefully, the cold snap and expected snowfall over the next two weeks will keep NYC’s violence at bay like only Mother Nature can do.
