Oxford Dictionaries has just announced that the word “selfie” has been officially selected as their international Word of the Year.

Selfie is defined by Oxford Dictionaries as “a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website.” According to research collected by the organization, use of the word has increased dramatically by about 17,000% compared to usage as of this time last year.

Other less popular words that didn’t make the cut include “bedroom tax,” “binge-watch,” “bitcoin,” “olinguito,” “shmeat,” “showrooming” and “twerk.”

EDIT by M.G.: The National #Selfie Portrait Gallery exhibit at the Moving Image Contemporary Video Art Fair in London is coming to New York — bigger, better and selfie-er and video art-ier… January 2014. Stay tuned.
