Short Film Shows Why Community Should Rally to Save Punjabi Deli

May 12, 2015 | Prachi Gupta

There are few places in New York where you can you get as satisfying and delicious heaping of daal chawal than at the Punjabi Deli, and that’s not even considering the cost — under $5. But for the past 5 years, the Indian food joint has been hurting; owner Kulwinder Singh says that the food stop’s revenue has been cut by half ever since the city began (and then delayed) its construction project that replaced the parking spots once filled by hungry cabbies.

Singh has proposed that the Department of Transportation build a Taxi Relief Stand by the proposed park, allowing the deli to recoup some of the patronage it continues to lose. A new film by Adeel Ahmed aims to help #SavePunjabiDeli by bringing awareness to the deli’s plight, and to rally support beyond the Lower East Side community. Watch it above.
