Staten Island Groundhog: Spring Is Coming Early

February 2, 2015 | Prachi Gupta

Here’s some good news on a day with such horrid weather: Staten Island Chuck did not see his shadow, which, according to faux folklore, means that spring is coming early this year in New York. Staten Island Advance reports that Chuck made his prediction just before 7:30 AM on Monday.

During last year’s ceremony, Mayor Bill de Blasio dropped Chuck’s stand-in groundhog and she died a week later due to “internal injuries.” After last year’s fiasco, Chuck sat not in de Blasio’s arms but in a “spacious glass enclosure” and then raised via an elevator called the “Chuck-a-vator.”

It was “was safer for both species involved,” joked de Blasio.
