Steven Soderbergh Mashed Up Both Psycho Versions Into One Film

February 26, 2014 | Andy Cush

Steven Soderbergh’s post-“retirement” projects keep getting more interesting. First, he was selling t-shirts based on obscure references to fictional companies in film; now, he’s cutting together Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho and Gus Van Sant’s shot-for-shot remake of same into one mashed-up über-thriller. Says Soderbergh: “This…comes from a place of total affection, openness, and honey bought directly from a beekeeper.”

Watch the whole, feature-length thing here.

The director nullified the most striking difference between the two films, converting Van Sant’s color to black and white, except for the infamous shower scene, which gets appropriately blood-red.

Van Sant’s masturbation sound effects during Norman’s peeping Tom episode — another notable addition — remain intact.
