Surf’s Up For City’s Surfers

February 23, 2015 | Prachi Gupta

The Parks Department wants to add two new surf-only beaches in Rockaway. If approved, the proposal would double the number of year-round surfer-only beaches in New York City.

Since 2005, surfing has been allowed between Beaches 67th and Beach 69th streets. Another surf-only beach opened in 2007 between Beach 87th and Beach 92nd streets. The two new beaches would expand the surf area in the 60s and 100s blocks, DNAinfo reports:

The Parks Department has now suggested adding two more locations — Beach 65th to Beach 67th streets and Beach 110th to Beach 112th in Rockaway Park, according to Borough Commissioner Dorothy Lewandowski.

“One of the suggestions we’ve heard from the community is that there is interest in expanding the areas available for surfing,” she said in a statement.

The plan now seeks approval from the Community Board.
