One of the most important reasons to vote for Barack Obama has nothing to do with taxes or healthcare. What the people still on the fence need to look at is how each candidate will affect the makeup of the Supreme Court. Artists Elizabeth Amorose & Brett Traylor articulate this point, providing Reason #16 why voting for John McCain could crucify Lady Justice’s separation of church and state: “We are one robe away from a conservative Christian ideology controlling the Supreme Court.” The next president is likely to make at least two key appointments to the court and this will shift the balance even further right or back towards the middle where it belongs. With McCain outright saying he would seek to overturn Roe v. Wade, backed by Sarah Palin’s fundamentalist views on abortion, it’s possible that this landmark election could mean the difference between coat hangers and clinics.
It’s hard to believe that there’s people out there who still haven’t made up their minds about who to vote for on November 4, especially considering how wildly different their philosophies are on almost every issue. Take healthcare for example, their plans are basically polar opposites and artist Luba Lukova used this fundamental difference to offer Reason #12 for why a vote for John McCain isn’t optional, unless you don’t mind going to the emergency room when you’re sick: “This Health Coverage poster speaks about the 40 million Americans living in the world’s wealthiest economy without health insurance. It is beyond comprehension how we spend trillions on wars but there is not enough to protect the health of our own citizens, including children.”
Reason #4 for why you shouldn’t support mudslinger McCain for president from 30reasons.org, the group of graphic designers committed to providing a new argument daily for why Obama is better:
“John MaCain is a maverick that supported deregulation of Wall Street for the entire Bush administration, and it’s not until our economy is imploding that he cowboys up and admits the problem and the proposed solution — a taxpayer bailout.”
It was designed by artist Larkin Werner and with Senator McCain’s nervous tick last night, something about government buying up even more of that “toxic paper” to both the disgust of conservatives and liberals alike, the illustration is fittingly appropriate for the left, the middle, and at this point, even the right!
It’s officially under a month till the presidential elections (t-minus 28 days) and just in time to help the swing voters that prefer visual arguments for which candidate they should support, is this handy new website: 30reasons.org. Launched on Sunday (October 5th), the site “enlisted 30 graphic designers to create a poster that represents a reason to vote for Obama.” Every day a new image will be published with a simple goal in mind: “Use design to build a logical, multi-faceted argument for Obama and make it easy to share each reason with another person.” In other words, don’t both burdening the less intelligent with facts and figures, jut point them to the insightful pretty pictures. All the posters can be downloaded or printed, giving this internet campaign both virtual and real world applications. Even graphic kingpin Milton Glaser got in on the action, although his poster design is a far cry from those good ‘ol ‘I Love NY’ days. Here’s a full listing of the artists involved and an easy way to sign up your red state friends—assuming you have any.
