As a promo for Chronicle, a movie about three high school friends who gain super powers and can fly, a viral marketing agency created custom remote controlled aircraft disguised as humans and flew them around the city.

Oddly, the NYPD did not shoot them down or even respond, which would have been newsworthy. So, it’s a good thing a video about the flights was made and released, cause otherwise no one would have ever known. Sometimes viral marketing needs a little push out of the nest.

The New York City Department of Health launched a new advertising campaign warning people that if they drink super-sized soda from fast food spots, it could make them very overweight, contradict diabetes, and lose a limb. They articulate this via an image of a one legged man sitting on a stool. But as the New York Times reports, it was Photoshop, not diabetes that amputated the man’s leg.

The health department has used amputees before, like in these eerie anti-smoking testimonials, but apparently couldn’t find one to suit their needs, so they hired an actor, a policy which the agency’s spokesperson defended thusly:

“Sometimes we use individuals who are suffering from the particular disease; other times we have to use actors,” said John Kelly, a health department spokesman. “We might stop using actors in our ads if the food industry stops using actors in theirs.”

NYC: Defender of deceptive advertising!

You’ve heard that Morrissey sold his ultimate anthem to perpetually unrequited love Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want to a department store, right? Watch this improbably sweet lil spawn as your song is murdered.

Wretched cover too. Now, why would Moz ever do such a thing? What slice of the commercial’s $12 million budget was he divvied to be “very happy” in stabbing his ardent army in the hearts? What makes one Steven Patrick “Meat Is Murder” Morrissey — he who frisks concert attendees for sausage and leaves the stage at the smell of burning flesh — sell one of the songs that changed your life to John Lewis department store… what with their fine line of leather products, meat and meat accessories?

Perhaps, spite? As the theory goes, Moz and Johnny Marr are, as songwriters, the only ones from the band to financially benefit from the cover in the commercial. Maybe since Mike Joyce is allegedly plundering Moz’s royalties, he figured it’s time to put a thorn in Mr. Joyce’s side? Ah, sweet revenge… with a hint of hickory.
