Andrew Hem Sets City on Fire

Artist Andrew Hem is opening a solo exhibition in the new year, showing off his stylized portraits of urban life. Drawing on his native Cambodia, years writing graffiti and life in LA, Hem’s paintings feature an illustrated cast of characters alternately exuding energy or indifference, as in this starry eyed track bike rider admiring a molotov cocktail blaze. Culver City’s LeBasse Projects will exhibit this piece and others at the January opening of “One Leads to Another.” Read more »
After reports that two people were arrested re-striping bike lanes on Bedford Avenue, comes news that no arrests were in fact made. Only summonses were issued to the group, which included “both secular Williamsburg residents and members of the Hasidic community,” according to local bike shop owner and advocate Baruch Herzfeld. The skirmishes between the Hasidic community and cyclists continue with word that two people were arrested this morning by the Jewish secret police force for attempting to paint bike lanes on Bedford Avenue. Fresh air advocates and cyclists alike are still unhappy over the religious cult’s lobbying efforts, that resulted in the DOT removing 14 blocks of the bike lanes in South Williamsburg. Alleycat Cyclists Race for Thanksgiving Charity

Armed with shopping lists, nearly 120 cyclists set off from Madison Square Park on Saturday to buy food for the homeless, as quickly as possible. Now in its 11th year, the annual Cranksgiving race, which has spread to more than 13 other cities, saw its largest turnout yet with couples on tandems, furry creatures on mutant choppers, NYT building climber and photographer Renaldo Clarke as well as myself coming out for the alleycat-style Supermarket Sweep. As part of Lance Armstrong’s STAGES art show at Deitch Projects, a bike community center, WNW Space, has taken over Trackstar. Before it turns back to a track bike shop this weekend, the space will host a discussion and demonstration about stealing bikes. Read more »
The Brooklyn Banks, the famed Manhattan skate park below the Brooklyn Bridge, is being shut down. Immortalized as a practice spot for toys, the park will become “a staging area during the Brooklyn Bridge reconstruction” and reopen in 2014, according to the Downtown Express. Skaters, BMX riders and fixed gear freestylers: enjoy it while you can.
