Earlier in the week Jonathan Ames, the oddball writer/creator of HBO’s Bored to Death, mentioned on Twitter that he’d like to invite a stranger into his home to watch his television show at his apartment. Naturally, I wrote him an email lobbying to be the person he chose, and last night he wrote back.

Here’s what the text of my initial “please choose me and let me bring a friend” email:

About your Twitter invitation/solicitation…I would love to be the honoree. And just so you know, I’ve been known to make an occasional spectacular cheese dip, as I mentioned previously in Twitter response to you. Just saying.

turns out i don’t have ‘on demand’, nor do i have a working vcr, so i’m dropping the idea of having someone over to my apartment, but i am having a gathering of fans of the show at sample bar tomorrow night at 9:30, if you want to come. i’ll buy everyone a drink for the first half hour . . . i don’t know if anyone will actually show up but maybe a few people will, though i imagine most people will probably be too shy or who knows what . . . anyway, i’ll be there . . .

more importantly: thank you for covering the show, i appreciate it very much, and please say hello to courtney for me, if you can, and invite her to sample as well. the address is 152 smith street, right by the bergen street stop on the f train.

So there you have it…Jonathan Ames is buying drinks for all fans of the show tonight at Sample in Carroll Gardens. See you there…maybe.

A couple of weeks ago, a TV-less Jonathan Ames, the oddball writer/creater of HBO’s Bored to Death, used Twitter to find a stranger with premium cable to have him over so he could watch his own show. Upon learning of their talent’s dilemma, HBO purchased a shiny, brand new television for Ames, and now he’s hoping to give something back to the universe by inviting a Twitter stranger into his home to watch Bored to Death on his new television gifted to him by his employer.

And yes, I have emailed Jonathan Ames and sent him a message via Twitter letting him know that I want to be the one he chooses to invite over.

Some people consider writer/tranny-lover/boxer/Fiona Apple-dater Jonathan Ames’ unique brand of eccentricity, the same eccentricity displayed by the lead character in his HBO show Bored to Death also named Jonathan Ames, to be somewhat grating. Personally, as a HUGE fan of Ames’ writing, I find him enormously endearing, and his using Twitter to find a kindly stranger willing to let him come over to watch his own TV show (Ames doesn’t own a television.) will only help to enhance Ames’ already legendary kookiness.

The madness kicked off when Ames, desperate to find a television with HBO to watch his own show, used Twitter to send out distress signals…

Luckily for Ames, a fellow resident of Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn invited him over…

Then Ames asked if he could come over a little earlier to watch Curb Your Enthusiam as well.

And a good time was had by all…

The morning after, Ames was apologetic…

Now, surely some cynics will call this nothing but a clever publicity stunt by Ames, but I doubt those people have ever read anything by him (I highly recommend I Love You More Than You Know), nor do I really give a damn…this whole adventure was hilarious. How much do you wanna bet this Ames escapade ends up in an upcoming episode of Bored to Death?
