After a few days of deliberations, a jury found ex-cop Patrick Pogan guilty of being a lying scumbag, but totally innocent of assaulting Christopher Long, which is pretty amazing. Did these people not watch the same video as everyone else? Moral of the story: In NYC not even ex-cops get convicted of assault, even when blatantly caught on video. Second Bike-Assault Video Speaks for Itself, Which Is A Good Thing for Mouthy Cyclist

Prosecutors produced a second video which clearly shows Christopher Long getting pummeled off his bike by then officer Patrick Pogan for no reason, directly contradicting the ex-cop’s account, claiming the cyclist swerved towards him. And thank god for these videos, because Long is saying some not so smart stuff while testifying:

His actual words:

By exhorting them to assault me, I wanted the situation to go all the way. I was just really, really hyped up and very excited and it seemed like the next thing that was going to happen was that I was going to get punched out. And I didn’t want to wait for that to happen.

This didn’t help either:

“Right now, how often do you get stoned?” [Pogan's attorney] grilled the sometimes snarky cyclist, who cheerfully told of his “Nick-bag-a-day” marijuana habit. “That would be a five dollar bag — that’s why they call it a nick bag,” he explained.

Remember Patrick Pogan? He’s the disgraceful ex-cop who resigned from the NYPD after a video surfaced of him body checking cyclist Christopher Long during a Critical Mass ride that directly contradicted the police report he falsified. Anyway, his trial begins today and according to New York’s trashiest tabloid, his defense lawyer is somehow going to convince jurors that his client should be exonerated because Long smoked some weed 7 years earlier while in the Army. Please let that be their strategy.

Cyclist Sues for $1.5 Million Over Cop’s Assault

A cyclist assaulted by a former rookie cop in Times Square last year is filing a $1.5 million lawsuit against the NYPD for attempting to cover up the unprovoked attack. 30-year-old Christopher Long was bicycling through Times Square as part of a July 2008 Critical Mass ride when then-cop Patrick Pogan, just three weeks on the job, tackled him to the pavement.

Pogan arrested Long for assault, resisting arresting and disorderly conduct, falsely testifying that Long swerved and then ran his bicycle into him, causing him to fall and “suffer lacerations” on his arms. The video below, shot by a bystander, cleared Long of charges and led to Pogan’s firing for perjuring police reports.

Long’s lawyer, Jonathan Moore, points out that “Nobody would have cried foul if it wasn’t for that video,” and says the experience put Long, who is working on a farm in Wisconsin, through “psychological trauma, which explains why he is not living in New York City right now.”

Justice has been served today thanks to some video, YouTube, and the common sense of the Manhattan DA. All charges were dropped against Christopher Long, he’s the innocent cyclist who was brutally shoved to the ground by live at home bully cop Patrick Pogan. After a clip of the incident quickly spread online and word got out of Pogan’s perjurious statement claiming he was the victim, outrage swelled quickly beyond just the usual civil rights and Critical Mass crowd. Pretty much anyone who saw the clip besides evangelical law enforcement types were convinced of the wrongdoing. No word yet on Pogan’s punishment—he “was stripped of his badge and gun and placed on desk duty pending the completion of an investigation into his conduct.” That should be easy: guilty! |CityRoom|

The video of rookie cop Patrick E. Pogan (shield #28957) violently body checking cyclist Christopher Long during a Critical Mass group ride has a lot of people wondering what motivated him to act in such a blatantly egregious manner. Contrary to the video evidence and universal common sense, the cop (deponent) claimed—in a sworn statement—that Long swerved and then ran into him, “causing deponent to fall to the ground and causing deponent to suffer lacerations on deponent’s forearms” (PDF doc here). However, as the clip demonstrates, that’s not the case and the attack was unprovoked. Why is Officer ~~Perjurer~~ Pogan so angry? Patrick E. Pogan Jr. is a 22-year-old (born 9/9/85) NYC cop who lives at home with his parents in the infinitely boring, bike unfriendly suburban enclave of Massapequa Park. Even more depressing, his daddy is a former NYPD detective—good luck having fun in that relatively small house (street view and overhead map). ~~This is further evidenced when you call the house (516-|||-||||) and there’s a curt voicemail recording: “We’re not here right now, do what ya gotta do.”~~ Like most cops who live in Long Island but work in the city, Pogan most likely takes the LIRR daily, which when packed like the cattle car it is, could easily cause some intense mental discomfort. As to the effectiveness of the cowardly shove, it could be explained by the disgraced officer’s former football days. He played on his high school team and was even chosen to play as an offensive lineman on the 2003 Long Island All Star team. The Pogans also have tons of tax problems, with a federal lien in one case for the amount of $34,385.00. Plus the most damning evidence: he only had like 5 Facebook friends before deactivation. UPDATE: The phone number appears to have been changed, but all the other information is 100% correct.
