This time around, politicians have set their targets on adult drivers who light up with kids under 14 in the vehicle. And it won’t matter if the windows are rolled down or not.

The very act of smoking with a child on board could cost violators a $100 fine if a prudish state assemblyman and his colleagues have their way. Reports the Daily News: “If cops believe a driver is in violation, they can stop the vehicle and question the passengers’ ages.” Sounds like a plan. Why should parents be able to decide what’s good for their children?

The federal government is thinking about decorating cigarette packages with graphic pictures of dead people, dirty lungs, and sufferers of “chimney throat,” because they don’t want you to emit smoke from your neck (it’s bad form), or catch cancer. But cigarette makers are against this new public art campaign, because all the gross pictures will detract from their brands.

The Washington Post reports that the new warning labels would take up half the front and back panels of cigarette packs, and include both color pix and fun facts such as “smoking will kill you.” The Food and Drug Administration, which is spearheading the campaign along with the Department of Health and Human services, would choose the final labels next June after assessing input from the public, measuring survey results, and studying science. The cigarette makers would have 15 months to implement the new labels, after which everybody would stop smoking and either live forever or die from becoming too healthy.

Philip Morris, which is the nation’s biggest cigarette seller, actually backs the new labeling plan, because they say it will standardize the cig-making process. But other companies are standing by their brands; Lorillard Tobacco Co. is one company that’s suing the government about the new labels’ legality. “The tobacco makers in the suit had argued the warnings would relegate the companies’ brands to the bottom half of the cigarette packaging, making it ‘difficult, if not impossible, to see,’” the Post reports.

Here’s how you solve this problem: Get the folks in the pictures who are dying of chimney throat and lung cancer to wear t-shirts advertising the cigarette brands. That way, the warning labels can still be big, and the tobacco companies get their exposure.

But in a nation where 40% of the population is addicted to nicotine and “defying the authorities is a national sport,” it’s easier said than done. So, officials are instituting a heavy 500 euro ($700) penalty on smoke-inhaling lawbreakers caught defying the ban and businesses that repeatedly flaunt the law could “risk losing licenses.” |BBC|

New York City has some of the toughest anti-smoking laws in the country, banning people from lighting up at work and many public places. Although the laws have helped clear the air, a new study from the city’s health department suggests they’re not enough to protect non-smokers from cancer-causing clouds. The study found 57 percent of non-smoking New Yorkers tested positive for cotinine, a non-harmful nicotine byproduct indicative of secondhand smoke exposure, significantly higher than the 45 percent national average.

“It’s not clear why New Yorkers experience more exposure, despite the city’s relatively low smoking rate. It may be that living and working in close quarters with one another puts us at higher risk,” explained Jennifer Ellis, the lead author of the study and a former health department epidemiologist. The study did find that non-smoking “adults aged 20-39 years, males, and Asians” were the most affected by secondhand smoke. In semi-related news, researchers have determined that cannabis is a proven cancer killer so fire up your bongs, it’s healthy!
