People are really getting into these street art/sculptures/interactive rock formations in Union Square Park. Deitch Projects’ last public art installation, “Eleven Heavy Things” by the quirky, multi-disciplinary Miranda July provides ample things to stick your head, fingers and limbs through. In context. This TrustoCorp sign was installed on Wooster Street, suspiciously close to Deitch Projects, but you’ll have to draw your own conclusions as to who the art collective is specifically targeting.

If the May Day promotional poster seems familiar, you may have seen the same image on a poster for the new doc Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child. His painting of the film still from the doc is on both the May Day and film posters, as prearranged. Fairey’s studio created the titles for the film as well.

In short, Kathy Grayson will open a new gallery to showcase many of Deitch stable artists with buddy Rosson Crow likely one of them. Arrested Motion is pretty sure that it will be more Aurel Schmidt and Tauba Auerbach and less Swoon and Shepard Fairey, but with a large gallery space and a European gallery owner as financial backer in place, we’ll see for ourselves when we get more details on her upcoming “Street Market” exhibition sequel at the new digs. Jeffrey Deitch will offer some advice, but no official presence. Grayson recently told ArtInfo:

I think Deitch is an approach, not a person. It’s giddy, it’s excited, it’s irrational, it’s project-based. Jeffrey had big ideas, and he’d find a way to make them work. I don’t want to have a stable of artists and 10 solo shows a year. It’s going to be a crazy circus like it’s always been.

One request: bring back the Art Parade. Please? I know it makes me pretty giddy, excited and irrational. Can’t have a circus without a parade. Come on…

Drawing art crowds not only inside galleries, but also outside as well, Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood has been heralded as “one of the most vibrant street-art scenes in the nation, if not the world.” Naturally, this new title comes with some controversy, according to the Biscayne Times. Artist BooksIII, who founded art collective Primary Flight to paint the outdoor area in 2007, says, “Here was a place that was becoming an art hub, but for the most part it was one week a year [during Art Basel]. They appear and then disappear without looking at what was going on. We were like, ‘Fuck you, more is going on here.”

Then, in an unsurprising turn of events reminiscent of 11 Spring Street’s last stand, the scene’s starters saw powerful, PR-savvy organizers swoop in to capitalize on their years of efforts. While New York-based Deitch Projects and real estater Tony Goldman launched their branded mural project, Wynwood Walls, Jim and Karla Murray staged a Sushi Samba-sponsored street art show this past December. |Biscayne Times|

Michael Jackson makes his latest posthumous appearance down at Miami’s art mess. Riding a white horse in gilded clothes and cape, the King of Pop was unveiled in a massive Kehinde Wiley painting inside Deitch Projects’ booth at the Basel art fair.

Although the pop star passed away while the portrait was being planned, Wiley completed it, saying, “I think that his idea of collaborating with me was something that he really wanted to see through…I felt a responsibility to him to get it done.” Smaller pieces of the pop singer were also on display, including photographs by David LaChapelle, a mixed media take on Jeff Koons’ pet monkey sculpture as well as a rendition of his infamous white glove, which you can see courtesy of Arrested Motion. |The Art Newspaper|

After teaming up with artist David Ellis on an arduous animated painting in Italy, Blu is solo and stateside, rolling out another massive mural in Long Island City. Commissioned by Deitch Projects, who also bankrolled Os Gêmeos’ recent mural, the Italian artist is peeling back the walls on the influential gallery’s studios to reveal a golden moneymaking machine. Shirking the laborious painting process he’s known for, Kehinde Wiley showcases a collection of photographs of young, street fashionable African American men. Developed with the technical expertise of hip hop video director Hype Williams, “Black Light” opens at Deitch Projects’ 76 Grand Street space on Thursday night. Accompanying the opening from 6 to 9 PM, PowerHouse will release Wiley’s photo portraits in a by the same title.

Inside the paint splattered façade of 76 Grand Street, Deitch Projects has assembled a tribute to the late Dash Snow. In addition to some of the artist’s photos, collages, installations and graffiti, the community driven exhibition features countless snapshots from Snow’s life and memorial pieces from friends, fellow artists and graffiti writers. Above is a selection of images from the show, which runs through August 15.
