StolenSpace Opens Riotous Christmas Show

Flaming Coca-Cola cocktails, flashing Nuns, and crocodile hunters are on display for StolenSpace’s Christmas show. The “Winter Warmers” group exhibition features new works by the London gallery’s cadre of artists including Miss Van, Gabriel Dubois and D*Face. The British street artist “in need of a riot” also screenprinted a handful of covers for the 10th issue of street art magazine Very Nearly Almost, released at the opening.

“Winter Warmers,” December 4 – December 20, StolenSpace Gallery, London

If you couldn’t afford the original “UnAmerican Graffiti” piece by British street artist D*Face that was featured in his solo show in NYC, worry not, he’s releasing a limited edition print of it. The 21 color serigraph measures 34×48 inches, is an edition of 100, and available starting today at 3PM EST. Cheap it isn’t: $500. |Jetset Graffiti|

D*Face Paints ‘Shuttered Storefronts’

In addition to the opening of his Ludovico Aversion Therapy show at Jonathan Levine gallery this past weekend, British artist D*Face adapted some of the work into a series of murals painted on security gates on the Lower East Side—200 Clinton Street to be exact. While the exhibit at the gallery will be viewable until October 10th, the inevitable work of vandals will likely ensure a much shorter shelf life for these outdoor pieces.

D*Face Shows Off Images He Wants to Forget

UK-based street artist D*Face is showing off a scrambled series of works at his first solo show in the States. “Ludovico Aversion Therapy / All Your Dreams Belong To Us” opens tomorrow night at Chelsea’s Jonathan Levine Gallery and as the title suggests, features paintings crammed with mixed and matched comics, cash, and corporate logos. The billboard hijacking artist describes it as “a visual interpretation of lucid dreams—the replaying, disassembly and reconfiguring of images” infecting his mind. The show opens on September 12 and runs through October 10th at 529 West 20th Street, 9th Floor. Read more »

D*Face Hacks Human For Digital Display

Last week in London, while protesters were smashing things and 10 times as many journalists were photographing them, local street artist D*Face was showing his art on digital billboards around the city. The big question was: how did he do it? Were the billboards hacked like electronic road signs or bought like SKULLPHONE’s LA displays. Reached by email, D*Face told ANIMAL he pulled the billboards off “incredibly easily and it didn’t cost a penny.” Asked if the work was hacked, D*Face told us, “No not hacked, that’s near if not impossible, I’ve looked very long and hard at that option, but a miracle chance drunken encounter with a slightly corruptible individual that had access to the equipment helps. That’s all I can tell you as Clear Channel have gone ape shit over it.” Once again, booze and bribery prove themselves useful for getting things done.

D*Face Punks G20 With Digital Billboard

In London today, the G20 is in full swing, or rather, riot police are swinging at protesters. Local street artist D*Face took the opportunity to showcase some new work, not on the street but on digital billboards around the city. Several variations of the G20 20 pound note are being displayed with the Queen in varying states of makeup and facelifts, something D*Face has become quite good at.

So did he hack the ad space or buy it? Just over a year ago, SKULLPHONE put his character up on digital displays around LA. Some bloggers claimed their “boy” hacked into Clear Channel’s computers, but that was a lie. He actually paid for the self-advertisements. Did D*Face do the same? Read more »

D*Face’s ‘aPOPcalypse Now’

UK-based street artist D*Face exhibited a new series of work for his “aPOPcalypse Now” show at Black Rat Press. The exhibit features a “multitude of weird and wonderful rooms filled with installation pieces and sounds,” including depictions of Batman hanging by a noose, various advertising mash-ups, and other imagery that nicely captures the turmoil of the American economic system.
