Reveal: Fake American Apparel Ad Posters All Photoshopped

Last night, Stereo Hell exclusively shared with ANIMAL this nifty video presentation (click the red arrow) revealing that all of the guerrilla AA posters were in fact not physical posters, but expertly Photoshopped fakes (unlike the SH imposter’s shoddy work). We were clued into this twist months ago, but we promised to keep mum until the series was finished. And, the Stereo Hellers tell us the video marks the end of this very entertaining erotic art/ad project. “I already feel sad thinking about walking in Soho and not having to take pics of billboards,” says SH’s Imp. But they’re looking forward to beginning work on the next idea. As are we.

Lichtenstein And Lactation. Questions?

The Stereo Hell American Apparel guerrilla art project continues to hit the pop art movement, this time spritzing maybe the most famous work by “industrial painter” Roy Lichtenstein. The piece parodied is the comic book inspired “Drowning Girl” (1963), on view at MoMA. To recap, the prankster has DPed Damien Hirst, cannonballed Jeff Koons, Xed out Andy Warhol, ass-targeted Jasper Johhs (and shot a hole in Richard Prince), and stood Maurizio Cattelan on his head. Now, Lichtenstein posthumously gets breast milk squeezed in his face. What next? Well, there are an awful lot of famous pop artists. And Animal will keep chronicling this art/advertising remix.

Fake AA Ad Plot Dickens (sorry)

First off, this fake American Apparel ad poster is not by the original artist. The style is obviously different, plus Stereo Hell confirms it (they also confirmed to Animal that the artist is not working for AA.). OK, to this piece: this penis poster is an ode to Yazmany Arboleda’s installation The Assassination Of Barack Obama, part of a New York City exhibit that was shutdown by police back in June. It was emailed to Animal (and Gawker) with the claim that it was snapped On Varick Street near Franklin. However, I had two veteran art directors confirm for me that the poster was Photoshopped and is likely not real. To refute this, the tipster claims she went and took more photos of the poster, and emailed them. But that just provided more evidence. After the jump, take a look at a second pic and the evidence.

Notice that this poster looks much different than the first one—note the texture, creases and the hole in the upper right quadrant. Also, most incriminatingly, the two posters are in different spots on the wall. Note the position of Obama’s tie in relation to the HBO logo in both posters; with the first one, it’s to the left of the logo and with the second, it’s to the right.

You Can’t Spell ‘Dirty Love’ Without Dov

One of the world’s most iconic and abused pieces of art gets the salty Stereo Hell American Apparel makeover at Wooster and Grand in SoHo, again Dovingly paying tribute to The Man Himself. If only Charney spelled his given name “Dove!” Notice that the woman’s heavily-lipsticked mouth looks like a ‘D’ and the thick red areola of her left breast is an ‘O.’ But where’s the ‘V?’ Put your imagination in the gutter for a second, and I think you’ll come up with the answer. Incredibly, Robert Indiana never trademarked his “Love,” so our prankster doesn’t have to worry about copyright infringement. Heck, if I was the AA Colonel, I’d pay the artist to put one of these red DOVs up in every retail outlet, maybe put a line drawing of a dildo where the ‘E’ would be. Brand yourself Charney! Just fyi: The headline on this poster is from this real American Apparel ad.

This latest piece in the nearly year-old Stereo Hell guerrilla marketing project is the most playful and mind-altering yet. The artist has redrawn the scene from a recent poster placement on the front door of a soon-to-open American Apparel outlet, and then created a hilarious crime scene. The two cops standing on their heads are a recreation of Maurizio Cattelan’s goofy 2002 sculpture “Frank & Jamie.” Cattelan is probably most famous for his controversial piece “La Nona Ora,” depicting Pope John Paul II being struck be a meteorite (which sold at Christie’s for $3 million). Add in the requisite fake naked babe mocking/celebrating the upside-down coppers, and, well, I honestly don’t know WHAT the hell you end up with. But it’s fucking fun!

Fake AA Ad Artist Makes/Desecrates Fake Warhol

This is getting, like, way to avant artsy fartsy for me. Having previously DPed Damien Hirst and gone skinny dipping with Jeff Koons, here the fake American Apparel ad imaginer dares to take a potshot at the Grandpop of pop artists. Scurrilous! Frankly, it’s fine and dandy by me. Unlike pretty much every other ad hack in the world, my take on Warhol is that he was nothing more than an over-glorified silkscreener. And anytime anybody calls him a “painter,” my brain throws up in my skull a little bit. Lucien Freud. Francis Bacon. Those are/were modern painters. So X out all the Andy Marilyns you want, sexy leggy fake AA babe. It turns me on. FYI: here’s the corresponding real AA “BFF” ad.

Fake AA Ad Artist Cannonballs Fake Artist Koons

After fucking fake artist Damien Hirst in his overhyped bum just last week, the brassy fake American Apparel ad burlesquer splashes water in the face of the neo-pop bullshitter. Koons’s “Equilibrium” (1985) consists of one Wilson and two Spalding basketballs floating in a mixture of sodium chloride reagent and distilled water. According to the artist, it suggests “death.” As does diarrhea. So let me be the first to call it: the AA prankster’s racy reimagining of Koons’s krap suggests “life.” OK, where’s my Art In America column?

Here, on Smith Street at Union, the prankster, again tweaking AA’s Legalize LA posters, references the dirty Damien Hirst double penetration photo “Ho ho ho.” Ha! Porny AA CEO Dov Charney does love dildos. We even get a cameltoed bikini and the opening lyric from “Dress You Up.” Plus: red nipples and red lips and knockoff American Apparel socks (the real ones have three stripes)—it’s a rich canvas! You Can’t Spell ‘ANAL’ Without ‘LA’

Here, the fake American Apparel ad artist cheekily and literarily responds to a rash (heh) of AA immigration reform posters featuring a JFK quote recently erected at several locations in downtown NYC (this one’s at Kenmare and Bowery). Although the 2003 Supreme Court decision in Lawrence vs. Texas essentially voided all anti-sodomy laws that were still on the books in 13 US states, I still applaud the sentiment—and the derriere—of this piece. And right now, I’m imagining Dov reading this post, pulling his peeny out of his AA jeans, and masturbating to this ass and thong line drawing (and maybe also Giselle’s butt there) while thinking about one of his immigrant female factory worker’s nice round rump.

Fake AA Ad Artist Orally Services The Joker

In a striking tribute to the red lipsticked villain of The Dark Knight, the fake American Apparel ad prankster delivers his/her most graphic poster work yet. A blowjob depicted in this spare illustration style is somehow more raunchy than a photo, isn’t it? Now some of you may counter, “hey copyranter you fucking dick, how do you know that’s not just a dildo?” Well you cocksuckers, I’m not 100% sure. But this second fake AA penis poster, which was also apparently erected (heh) recently in the same downtown area near Kenmare St., suggests to me that it is in fact the hard shaft of a schlong between those luscious red lips. Playtime!
