The George Washington Bridge is 80-years-old and desperately in need of some major surgery. Every cable on the span needs to replaced, a process which typically happens after 70 years and the Port Authority has green-lighted $15 million to get the renovations started. It’s part of a $1 billion plan to overhaul the bridge and is expected to take eight years, pushing its suspender ropes far beyond their expiration date. (Photo: Andrew Fleming/flickr)
The two security guards caught napping have been fired, but George Washington Bridge security apparently has a deadly sleeping disorder: “A guard was reportedly asleep when a man walked by and jumped to his death off the bridge.” |CBS|
The Daily News sent their fearless “intrepid news reporter” atop the George Washington Bridge to document workers as they replaced the famed landmark’s “necklace” of lights. The older lights were installed in 1964 and aren’t nearly as efficient as the new light emitting diodes: “The new lights are expected to produce annual energy and maintenance savings of $49,000, and they will also reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 260,000 pounds.” |NYDN|
