Morrissey Hacked Into Google Earth

Someone at Google must be a Smiths fan. Apparently, if you “fly” over the latest Google Earth to Salford Lads Club in the UK and enable “3D buildings,” you’ll walk right into Morrissey.

The Google hack insert is a pixeled replica of Morrissey’s pose on the 1986 The Queen Is Dead LP, right at the virtual replica of the location at St Ignatius Walk in Salford, M5 3RX, United Kingdom, where the army of Moz-coiffed adorable clones ride bicycles in the “Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before” video.

So said a superfan on Morrissey-Solo or (you know “Morrissey So Low” if you please, Steven Patrick). As a skeptic, I tried it. It’s really there. Yey?

So, Google made this festive, self-promoting clip starring the most searched people, places and videos from the Internet this year and the Internet is very upset that Rebecca Black is all up in there mixed with Japan’s disaster and the Bin Laden assassination.

Pretend-zoom around Google Earth with tearjerker pit-stops for photos of various revolutionary protests (seems to be a hot topic these days). Then see videos of dead tech wizard’s postmortemly-viral inspirational speeches, etc. etc. While commenters are enraged at our “American” slanted interests and comparative apathy towards real world issues, you gotta hand it to this Google Search reel — there’s a lot less cats and Justin Bieber than expected.

Microdrones did sell a UAV, but to an executive indulging a personal hobby, not directly to the internet juggernaut. Google has just launched a new feature that turns its soothingly minimal title page into a background image of your choice, which is a bitch to turn off. Struggling only makes it worse. But, there’s a way to fix it.

Once your eyes have been thoroughly assaulted by dewy yellow flowers and Jeff Koons balloonery, all you want is your white background back. Even Canadians hate it. So, first, calm down. Here’s what you can do: use the Google beta page instead or, choose a white background and stay logged in (but that will make your text all ghostly gray.) C’est la vie.
