It Takes “Factory-like Mills” To Sustain NYC’s Heroin Hunger

The Associated Press reports on a bunch of recent heroin busts in the NYC area and how many of them share the same MO. Wholesalers are operating with more discretion and an emphasis on the bottom line: profit and branding. One “mill” in the Bronx had its brands stamped on the wall like a veritable dope menu, that included names like “9/11,” “Charlie Sheen,” “Lady Gaga,” and “Energizer” (bunny), among others. The retention rate was: 88% for heroin, 54% for methadone. Unfortunately, poking people with needles isn’t as socially acceptable as giving them shots and since heroin is illegal and often branded as a killer drug, its use is not widely advocated.

The Heroin Stamp Collective raised enough money for their art exhibit on the “branding of heroin in New York City” and starting today, you can see tons of glassine packets from $10 smack hits at the White Box gallery. Just in case you wanted to brush up on your marketing skills. “Heroin Stamp Project,” The Social Art Collective, Jun 23 – Jun 29, White Box, New York

Twenty people were arrested in what authorities say is the biggest heroin bust on Long Island’s East End. According to Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota, the drug ring was responsible for selling about 2,500 bags of dope a week, which, in the scheme of things, seems like a relatively small amount considering the suburban enclave’s heroin nest status.
