Artist Marco Brambilla is currently exhibiting his Flashback video piece in LA, which is great if you like your eyes fucked with hundreds of perfectly-edited film scene glimpses. See it pulsate furiously until you can barely recognize that creepy little toy from Day Watch and the falling house from My Own Private Idaho.

The artist recently projected his video works the St. Patrick’s Cathedral during the New Ideas Festival. He’s also very pop, that with directing Kanye’s Power and getting ripped off by Lady Gaga. Being mainstream doesn’t make him any less brilliant. Check out his epic hell/heaven moving collage Civilization. While hell is rife with Nazi rallies, titties and lightning, heaven is inhabited by Michael Jackson, Lassie and dead presidents. Somewhere in between it’s just chorus lines and public transportation or so suggests an intriguing new video installation in the Standard Hotel, looming over the Highline. The video, “Civilization,” was installed last week and is composed of more than 400 video clips to take guest on an ascent to Heaven or descent to Hell, depending on which way they’re riding. Preview the work directed by Marco Brambilla above, and save yourself a trip to the Meatpacking District, which is something close to hell.
