Artist Melts Bloodsicle Swastika in Protest of May Day

There are countries that take this May Day stuff seriously. Hundreds of thousands marched in Moscow yesterday: an army of anti-Kremlin liberals, clusters of Commies and hoards of irritating, xenophobic Nationalists, all with their own agendas. On that note, here’s outsider artist BioNihil melting swastika-shaped ice made from his own blood by pressing it against the wall of an unemployment office in Weimar, Germany. Read more »

New York City “Bed Bugs” for Shepard Fairey

Samuel Mark, the same art prankster who left a “Suspisious Package?” in Soho the other day, strikes again. He just gave Shepard Fairey a present in the form of a ratty old couch full of New York City “BED BUGS” in front of the wheatpaster’s ‘May Day’ mural.

Vintage May Day Parade

Today is May Day or as some call it International Worker’s Day. For most New Yorkers it means mostly nothing, but for the car driving dwellers it’s a bonus: alternate side of the street parking rules are suspended. For communists, labor party groups, and vegans though it’s protest time. Above is a photo from a 1948 May Day Parade rally in Manhattan.

Carpenters Union Hammering Away At Walgreens

Just in time for May Day! According to these fliers that were littered all over a sidewalk in front of a Walgreens in Bushwick last night, the mega drug store, “despite having over $14 Billion in sales,” is allegedly building new chains in NYC with “non-union labor and out of state contractors.” The Carpenters Local 926 is urging an all out boycott, claiming that the prescription-filling franchise isn’t supporting the city, “IF WALGREENS REFUSES TO SUPPORT NYC, WHY SHOULD WE SUPPORT THEM? Find a Drug Store that cares about working families. Bring your business there.” This call for action comes on the heels of the nation’s largest drugstore chain finalizing its 15-year lease at One Times Square, that’s the massive office tower that hosts the annual dropping of the ball for New Year’s Eve.
