An 18-karat solid gold Monopoly game set covered with hundreds of precious gemstones is being unveiled today at the Museum of American Finance, on Wall Street, because that’s exactly what we need right now… No, really, they actually think this is exactly what we need right now.

The museum CEO explained the uplifting power of the board game:

The game is symbolic to America and was popularized during the difficult economic times of the depression. We again face difficult economic times, and this incredibly valuable item will bring joy to our many visitors.”

Now that the international edition of Monopoly was released that put New York on par with Indiana Avenue, here’s a Helvetica version that’s not nearly as offensive. It was created by designer Florent Guerlain and the visual scarcity jives perfectly with the current financial meltdown instigated by a subprime mortgage industry gone wild. Monopoly Disrespects New York, Turns It Into Indiana Avenue

If you ever needed a reason to not trust the collective will of the internet, here ya go courtesy of Monopoly enthusiasts: “In the online contest that began in January, both New York and London were relegated to the red property.” A red property? With the rents we pay? Yup, crappy $220 Indiana Avenue where even a hotel only gets you $1.050 if someone lands on it. At least give NYC Marvin Gardens status. Montreal took the prime spot, Boardwalk, and Riga (Latvia) got Park Place. Even the dollar is replaced with some weird currency with a crossed out M in this international heathen version of the nostalgic board game. Jump for the full list of altered properties.
