The purplish, rodent-like thing was spotted on the sidewalk inside the park this week and although the critter isn’t nearly as mysterious as its Long Island predecessors, it’s still worthy of a mention for its location alone. It looks strangely similar to the infamous Montauk Monster of multiple summers past, as much as bloated, unidentifiable, fur-stripped animals can look alike anyways.

This latest discovery is a fine specimen that we knew would come eventually; after all, it’s not really a summer without a “monster” invading NY’s shores. Although nothing will ever be as beautiful or as frightening as the original beast of Montauk, let’s just hope this carcass was saved so its DNA can be analyzed, and we can put this myth to rest once and for all.

Located two miles off the eastern coast of Long Island and boasting 840 acres surrounded by stunning waterfront views and sandy beaches, the government is getting ready to put the controversial infectious disease lab at Plum Island on the market. Interested?

The prime real estate will go to the highest bidder and is the first step in shutting down the animal research facility in favor of a new, deadlier one to be built in Kansas. The deal includes numerous buildings, a “9.5-acre support facility on Orient point,” and although not listed, numerous genetic, Montauk Monster-like aberrations. |Newsday| (I’d link, but Newsday has a stupid pay wall system.)

The long snouted, dinosaur-looking creature was found by soldiers on the eastern most part of Russia on the Sakhalin shoreline near Japan. Like the monsters that came after it, this thing wasn’t ready identifiable either, but was supposedly scooped by “Russian special services for in-depth studies.” And just today, the spiny behemoth was resuscitated and dubbed the Moscow Monster for the interwebs to enjoy all over again!

The summer has come to an end, but the mystery surrounding the Montauk Monster continues to build, mostly because new beasts are still washing up. Last month, a unidentifiable carcass was found on Rocky Point and now there’s word of another corpse spotted at Ocean Beach Park in New London, Connecticut. It was found by a family strolling along the beach and like its predecessor, had a “pointed, turtlelike snout,” but unlike the backwater residents of Montauk, the Clapsadles notified experts who agreed to take look at the photos. An official from the Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration claimed it had to be a raccoon, there’s no other explanation:

Maggie Jones, director of the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center in Mystic, said Sunday night after examining photos that her best initial guess would be a raccoon. “I’m quite certain of it,” she said. “The arrangement of the teeth look like a raccoon and the skull is pretty distinctive. It’s nothing else I can think of.”

Some argue otherwise and are convinced it’s another experiment gone bad from the shadowy animal disease lab at Plum Island. While the scientific community is rather uninterested in this creature and would likely balk at a ‘Plum’ tie-in, when you look at the proximity of the two sites on a map and note the path of the ferry which just happens to pass right past the island and the beach it was found, the outlandish speculation becomes all the more real. And most importantly these continued discoveries keep the still not sold out official t-shirt all the more relevant. |TheDay|
Although the case of the Montauk Monster still hasn’t been solved, a new creature has washed up on the North Shore of Long Island in Rocky Point. Like its counterpart found to the south, the carcass wasn’t readily identifiable from photos and not so surprisingly is now also missing. However, according to locals in Montauk, there is no mystery as to who has the ‘Monster’ it’s more of a question of when will it be unveiled. ANIMAL caught up with Colin Davis (he’s the kid that appeared in this video on CNN showing the bones to Jeanne Moos) on Main Street two weeks ago and he said outright that his uncle Paul Davis has it. Davis is a burly, longtime Montauk local, surfer, and all around tough guy who dragged the carcass out of fellow, artsier resident Noelle Arikian’s yard.

Kathleen Engstrom, who owns Montauk T-Shirts, said quite matter-of-factly that the Davis family has the Monster, and she’d know, they’re best friends—their kids surf together. According to her, Paul and Paulette Davis definitely have what was left of it. When reached by phone last week, she said that both Paul Davis and Noelle Arikian have retained legal counsel. “They’re both currently negotiating with National Geographic,” according to Engstrom. When we asked Colin Davis why not just turn the body over to scientists or some kind of accredited institution, he had a simpler answer: “It would ruin the fun, it would ruin the mystery.”

“Plum Island, Restricted” reads the oversized letters emblazoned into the ground and visible from the air. Welcome to the Plum Island Animal Disease Center. With all the talk of the Montauk Monster and other recent cryptozoological phenomena, one of the unintended effects of the media’s saturation has been an increased spotlight on the the government’s clandestine research facility. Located about 2.5 miles off of Orient Point and approximately 120 miles from NYC, it is referred to as Long Island’s Area 51. The lab’s official business is keeping the country’s livestock from dangerous diseases, but has been accused of simultaneously working on bio-weapon research that could wipe out an enemy’s food supply for the past few decades. But even before Plum Island was taken over by Homeland security in 2003, it has been steeped in controversy.

Some claim it’s responsible for hatching and then releasing Lyme disease and the West Nile Virus—both of which reportedly emanated from regions around the tiny island. There’s also been discussion about the laboratory’s classification, with some arguing that the biolevel3 facility is actually a biolevel4 which basically means they can experiment with extremely dangerous pathogens and viruses that could kill off mass populations of animals and humans alike. The point is that it’s a semi-toxic place and that’s why any deer that swim to the island are shot on sight and workers must strip and shower several times—although for some reason they do encourage birds to nest. There’s also this Iron Cross helipad, but we’re not sure that means, although it must have a pretty significant esoteric meaning for someone else besides symbol studying conspiracy theorists.
