Did you see the lunar eclipse last night? Astronomy fans were especially excited since it occurred during the winter solstice. The last time that happened was 1638 and will be another 83 years before it happens again. Here’s what it looked like from Brooklyn.

In case you were wondering why the Earth’s shadow casts a red hue on the Moon, NASA offers this explanation:

Imagine yourself standing on a dusty lunar plain looking up at the sky. Overhead hangs Earth, nightside down, completely hiding the sun behind it. The eclipse is underway. You might expect Earth seen in this way to be utterly dark, but it’s not. The rim of the planet is on fire! As you scan your eye around Earth’s circumference, you’re seeing every sunrise and every sunset in the world, all of them, all at once. This incredible light beams into the heart of Earth’s shadow, filling it with a coppery glow and transforming the Moon into a great red orb.

And here’s a video from Gainsville, Florida:

Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin touched down and walked on the surface as Michael Collins orbited above. Conspiracy theorists continue to claim that the lunar landing, as well as the five subsequent missions, were a hoax. And nearly seven years ago, Buzz Aldrin punched one of them in the face.

Bart Sibrel, the maker of two films claiming the moon missions were faked, took the blow after luring Aldrin to a Beverly Hills hotel under the guise of a Japanese TV interview, then demanding the 71-year-old former astronaut swear his moonwalk on the bible. Fortunately, the galactic punch was captured on film, below.
