Nick Walker’s NYC Themed Work Continues To Disappoint

Legal wall painting stencil artist Nick Walker who can best be described as a sort of “Rubbish Banksy,” has yet to create a body of artwork that the city’s inhabitants can be proud of. After strolling through town this past summer to paint as many spots that he could get permission for and later retuning to do a fully sanctioned mural in the East Village a few months later, the artist has continually come up short. Even his fine art is lacking some originality and punch, like this print of the Empire State Building splashed with multicolored drips. Nick Walker’s Very Legal Adverart In the East Village

TMZ thinks they caught Banksy in the act, but unfortunately for Harvey Levin and crew, it was actually fellow British stencil artist Nick Walker. Unlike Banksy, it appears that the Bristol native doesn’t outsource his murals and was spotted in a cherry picker working on this piece last night. However, like the rest of the stuff he did last time he was in town and the latest round of Colossal Media painted Banksy walls, the work is entirely LEGAL—and most likely rented space as well. More action shots here and what looks like an actual illegal piece, in essence, making him more prolific on the streets of NYC than his fellow compatriot.

Auction Results for Bonhams Street Art Sale

This afternoon, Bonhams NY held their “Contemporary Art” auction which featured an array of work, including some prints and originals from Banksy, Nick Walker, and Faile. Despite his recent rash of spray painted publicity around the city, Walker’s pieces did not skyrocket like fellow Bristol native Banksy, with his unofficially titled “Laugh Now” original (pictured above) fetching $210,00—although in all fairness, Walker’s “Moona Lisa” and “The Morning After” prints beat out both of the art prankster’s prints. Nick Walker Sticks His Neck Out in Billyburg

After hitting up Thunder Jackson in the West Village and pretending to be Banksy, Nick Walker has moved on to Williamsburg, creating this radio controlled, “Vandal” spitting-giraffe. With his work featured in tomorrow’s auction at Bonham’s NY, the artist is hard at working trying to drum up some added hype by hitting as many legal walls as possible. Considering how well he did in that last auction, it should be interesting to see if his recent flurry of street activity helps up the prices on the few pieces he has. Despite the small selection of work this is a hugely important auction for the 39-year-old stencil artist from Bristol. He’s got London and LA geeked, now all he needs to do is lock down NY, which might be tough considering the city’s alleged lack of excitement or rather, paying big money for street art. |WilliamsburgIsDead|

Banksy & Nick Walker: One and the Same?

According to a waitress at the newly stenciled Thunder Jackson restaurant, she witnessed someone purpoting to be Banksy painting the wall last night, “the whole thing took him about 15 minutes.” When asked if she was positive it was Banksy, she emphatically stated “yes,” and then awkwardly added, “Banksy is Nick Walker, they are the same person. Oops, I don’t think I was supposed to say that.” When pressed on why Banksy would use different names, she spilled, “He uses that identity because of visa and passport issues.” The waitress added that Banksy is going to make a big announcement about his identity but not while he’s in town, “He has a whole master PR plan, but he’s waiting till he leaves the country.” Of course this sounds like one sordid identity prank but it is interesting to note that Nick Walker sold over $1.5 million worth of his art at a recent solo exhibit in the UK—a trajectory unlike any other street artist besides Banksy, his fellow “spray mate” from Bristol. This stupid mystery continues.

Banksy’s Nick Walker’s ‘Thunder’ Wall In NYC

The rumor is true. The elusive ~~self-dubbed “art terrorist” Banksy~~ Nick Walker rolled into NYC and decorated the Sullivan St. facing wall of restaurant Thunder Jackson located on Bleeker in the West Village last night. In addition to three characters of a man walking with an umbrella, he also added a nice drippy “Vandal” and finished it off with his signature ~~“B”~~NW at the bottom. A waitress from Jackson’s confirmed that it was indeed Banksy, mentioning that he’s friends with one of the guys involved with the bar. She also noted that he was originally scheduled to paint the wall on Wednesday night but someone stole a bunch of his supplies. More photos and some physical evidence after the jump.
UPDATE: It’s a Nick Walker piece, but why is he going around telling people he’s Banksy? Something fishy is going on.

BANKSY, Faile, and Nick Walker Highlight Bonham’s Auction

Even with the economy in the shitter, the well off are still buying artwork at the city’s auction houses which is good news for Bonham’s NY. They are holding their first New York Sale of international Contemporary Art on May 13. The collection isn’t as robust (or expensive) as the upcoming Phillips de Pury sale we previewed, but there are some notable works worth highlighting. Besides the obligatory crop of Warhols, there’s a BANKSY original (pictured above) that is sure to make all the headlines. ANIMAL perused the online catalogue and presents some of best low brow picks of the litter.
