President Obama accepted his controversial Peace Prize this morning in Oslo, Norway. In his acceptance speech, Obama made the case for the ethical dropping bombs every now and again: “Evil does exist in the world. A nonviolent movement could not have halted Hitler’s armies. Negotiations cannot convince al Qaeda’s leaders to lay down their arms. To say that force is sometimes necessary is not a call to cynicism, it is a recognition of history. Where force is necessary, we have a moral and strategic interest in binding ourselves to certain rules of conduct. And even as we confront a vicious adversary that abides by no rules, I believe that the United States of America must remain a standard bearer in the conduct of war.” |CNN|
Look, I think we can all agree that Barack Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize today was sort of ridiculous. I mean, there are many more who’ve done more to promote peace and unity in the world who haven’t won the award. But for wingnut talking heads to use his winning the award as another sadly predictable excuse to ridicule the president, it’s just…fucking disgusting. In case you missed it, Barack Obama just gave a brief speech outside the White House reacting to his being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He basically said that he doesn’t deserve it but will accept it based on the hope that he’ll be successful at promoting world peace in the future. Or something.
