Olafur Eliasson’s Fog Changes Colors, Looks Dangerous

Olafur Eliasson’s installation with architect Ma Yanson at the Ullen Center for Contemporary art will have you walking through a colorful fog room. Impressed ArtInfo sites various influences, except for Antony Gormley’s fog room “Blind Light”, which is pretty much the same thing, but devoid of pretty colors.

Eliasson is the same guy whose underwhelming environmental/visual nuance “New York City Waterfalls” sprayed salty tree-killing backwash along the East River. In this collaborative installation, he is having people walk through thick, non-transparent gas lit up by neon-colored florescent lights. Looks fun, but I’d be careful not to breath too deeply, just in case.

Dead Artists’ Soap Box and Polaroids Go to Auction

If you’ve ever wanted to stand on Andy Warhol’s soap box or paper your walls with someone else’s party photos, tomorrow’s your chance at Phillips de Pury’s contemporary art sale. In addition to one of Warhol’s wooden Brillo boxes, valued up to $900k, the smaller-than-normal auction features Dash Snow’s “Polaroid Wall,” estimated at the posthumous price of $40k to $60k. Also up for a bid is Jeff Koons’ $200k ice bucket, Banksy’s “Insane Clown” painting, Olafur Eliasson lightbox as wells as some pictures of nearly nothing by Felix Gonzalez Torres.

Olafur Eliasson Designs Skateboard for the Vain

Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson designed a new skateboard deck for Mekanism. Known for his East River tree-killing waterfall sculptures, Eliasson continues using liquid inspiration for “Your Mercury Ocean”: a 100 board series covered top and bottom with a reflective silver wave texture. Collectors will have to choose between function and aesthetics as they decide between covering the mirrored surface with grip tape or just putting the board on display.

Although Olafur Eliasson’s ‘Waterfalls‘ might go down as one of the most boring public art projects to emerge in NYC since both the Cow Parade and The Gates combined, now is the best time to view the most exciting phase of the project: its demolition. What If the ‘New York City Waterfalls’ Were In the East Village?

By now you have all seen Olafur Eliasson’s not so impactful, public arts project known as the ‘New York City Waterfalls’ scattered along the East River, but have you seen the renderings of the proposed East Village version of the water works? Not only are they stunning, but would also do that neighborhood a world of good. Could you imagine if this is what breakfast at Veselka was like? Plus, the massive amounts of runoff could be funneled onto St. Mark’s, one of many locales that could use a prolonged purging flood. |EVP|

‘New York City Waterfalls’ Are As Uninspiring As ‘The Gates’

Wow, that’s it? Here’s one of the four waterfalls placed along the East River waterfront as part of a public arts project concepted by ~~artist~~ Olafur Eliasson. His $15.5 million “New York City Waterfalls” exhibit required 30 permits from various governmental agencies and will stay on display until October 13th. The 90 to 120 foot waterfalls will be turned on from dawn to dusk and pump 2.1 million gallons of brackish East River water an hour. Hopefully these water works get a little more interesting when they’re lit up after sunset with special lighting, cause otherwise the waterfalls are about exciting as draping saffron-colored nylon fabric over metal poles in Central Park and calling it art.
