America has a serious OxyContin problem right now. Due to the widespread abuse of the heroin-like drug, manufacturers have switched to the gel form, making it harder for drug addicts to grind up and sniff and denying actual prescription holders access to the more effective original formula. It has also lead to a marked increase in the street price of the snortable “classic” version reports hip rehab website The Fix. In some places, oxy abuse has led to a surge in heroin use, leaving U.S. drug policy in perfect karmic alignment.
Brooklyn DA Charles Hynes announced the bust of the city’s largest illegal prescription pill ring and also explained the motivation behind abusing drugs like Oxycontin: “[Y]oung people are abusing pharmaceuticals not simply to get high, but often to improve their performance at work and at school, and while it may be viewed by them as clean and safe…they are as addicted and often as at risk, as anyone pumping heroin into a vein.” |TYW|
Oxycontin abusers are constantly discovering new and resourceful ways to strip off the time release coating on their prescription pill stash. By removing it and snorting the drug, users experience a much faster and stronger high making it feel more like heroin than pain relievers. One tried and true method for breaking it down into a highly sniffable form is to straighten out a hose clamp and use it like a cheese grater. See video of the pill grinding in action that supposedly makes it more “social” as well according to one Oxy chomping individual.
