Less than 24 hours after Banksy’s latest street art started popping up around NYC, its been vandalized. The words “Free Henry” were painted on several of the high profile pieces, but you’ll never guess who stenciled their name in credit: Poster Boy! But he’s in jail and although he will be released on bail in a few days according to his book publisher, Henry Matyjewicz hasn’t left Rikers Island yet. So how can this be?

We can only come up with three plausible explanations:

1) Poster Boy went into deep meditation and figured out how to astrally project his street art. 2) Poster Boy is a movement and Henry Matyjewicz is just the patsy that happens to be around during every arrest. 3) Someone else painted it to make it look like it’s the work of a collective. Occam’s Razor people.

As we reported yesterday, the artist-vandal known as Poster Boy was sentenced to 11 months at Rikers Island. He is housed at the Otis Bantum Correctional Center (OBCC), which one Department of Corrections operator described as “the worst jail” over there. But, he did say that being “an artist is a commodity” and could help keep him make friends as inmates often need stuff drawn for custom jailhouse-style stationery. Hey, it worked for KIKO. UPDATE: He’s been moved to the EMTC (Eric M Taylor Center).

Anyway, who knows how long it’s going to take to appeal the case and in the meantime, you may want to write him here:

The subway ad altering artist known as Poster Boy is in lots of trouble and this time community service was not an option. A source tells us he was sentenced to 11 months in jail by a Brooklyn judge this morning. Henry Matyjewicz was taken into custody immediately and will be sent to Rikers Island. Last week, the judge made a ruling in his favor that would have allowed him to avoid jail time, but since he didn’t show, that ruling has been voided and now he’s screwed. Free Poster Boy? UPDATE: We contacted Poster Boy’s attorney, Kerry Gotlib, and he gave us some insights into what went down.

Although PB did miss his May 6th court date he did come in the following day around 2PM on May 7th to apologize, however the court wasn’t hearing any of that and he was taken into custody. He spent the weekend at Rikers and it was this morning that he was sentenced to the 11 months. “It was unwarranted,” says Gotlib, who promised to absolutely appeal the “shocking decision.” He was expected to get 3 years probation, not jail time.

Nearly a year after his arrest at a Soho art opening, Poster Boy has been sentenced to community service. The ad altering artist was given 210 hours of work yesterday in Brooklyn Supreme Court after pleading guilty to two counts of criminal mischief, a felony and misdemeanor, according to the Post.

Characterizing the sentence as “somewhat extreme,” his lawyer offered the impression “that the DA’s office took a very harsh view of this case,” which appeared to focus on one of the artist’s Youtube appearances creating the “Tough Biatch” piece above. Hopefully the city puts Poster Boy to work doing something productive, like cutting down the illegal NPA advertising clogging the city. |NY Post|
