After mellowing out MTA billboards in Union Square, street artist Posterchild manipulated a video ad atop the entrance of the 23rd Street N/R subway entrance to unveil a more intimate message: “will you marry me?” Hailing from Toronto, the public space manipulator installed the piece with the help of his girlfriend, surprising her with its reveal. He writes:

She thought she was just helping me out with another street art project; I kept this covered until after it was installed and after the unveiling I was expecting some kind of reaction- but it took a little while to convince her that this was a proposal for real, and not just some art project!

Ha! But she said “Yes”, so it’s all gravy!

Posterchild is ramping up his arboreal assault on Williamsburg. Putting an abandoned phone booth to use, the Toronto-based street artist installed another evergreen nearby the last on Bedford Ave.

The Christmas season is starting earlier and earlier, not only in store windows but also in street art displays. Following his series of foliage-filled flyer boxes, PosterChild installed an Alberta Dwarf in an old, abandoned newspaper box off Bedford Ave in Williamsburg. If the miniature Christmas tree survives long enough, the Toronto-based artist hopes someone will festively decorate it, but based on past experience that’s not likely.

In an apparent tribute to Donovan and an attempt to subdue “those bright, aggressive MTA video ads,” Posterchild installed a new yellow “Mellow” piece in Union Square. The Toronto-based street artist is planning to put up a “slew of work” while he’s in New York for the next couple months. Video of the billboard manipulating process after the jump.

Posterchild was in town recently, mocking NPA’s dubious attempts to make their illegal street advertising appear more legal. The Toronto-based street artist replaced one of their advertisements to win some ad posters with his own sign hyping the coming onslaught of “illegal ads and other bullshit you didn’t ask for.” |Public Ad Campaign|

After planting some trashed newspaper dispensers with flowers and herbs, Posterchild is looking at what the city of Toronto is sowing. Instead of foliage, weeds, trash, even more trash, banana peels and “nada” are filling the city planters that Posterchild carefully cataloged. With the small signs, the guerilla gardening street artist hopes to inspire others to claim these misused spaces and at the minimum “discourage people from planting anymore garbage trees.” |Blade Diary|

In addition to sanctifying subway advertising, Toronto-based street artist Posterchild does guerrilla gardening too. He posted some new photos of his latest project: flower planters built inside trashed and mostly unused distribution boxes for crappy free papers no one wants. Sadly, the flowers don’t last long.

Why? I can’t say. I suspect that the box-owners are enforcing their territory, making rounds or complaints, maybe claims of safety issues. Who knows? But I hope that they were taken by garden-loving individuals who were excited for the possibility of free planters, soil, or plants….That’s a much nicer thought than the whole thing being pitched on principle.

Posterchild laments that while the foliage is quickly cleared away, the trash and empty sidewalk-hogging newspaper dispensers are near cleaned up. Click the images above for a lush look at the “green graffiti.”
