Prune Nourry — the artist behind NYC’s eugenics-awareness public installation SpermBar and the prenatal buffet — has completed the next series of her ongoing Holy Daughters project. Addressing Asia’s trend of aborting pregnancies after the fetus is diagnosed with the female gender (apparently, a malady in some parts of the world), Nourry continues to remix cultural mythology for Holy River by working with local artisans to build an 18-foot-high sculpture out of the clay from the Ganges, traditional trimmings and one hefty guilt trip.

The holy cow/unwanted would-be daughter was then was ceremoniously “returned” to the river, highjacking the Hindu goddess festival Durga Puja and injecting it with some gender commentary. That’s quite some “scene” intervention there.

When the cart rolls out, a second wave of participants will be able to select a truly unique mixed drink, fit to the specific material of each donation. There’s a “smorgasbord” of genetic options — eye color, religion, baby cuteness…

So there’s no real sperm or alcohol in these spunky, fruity beverages, but just like Nourry’s ovarian meals at the Procreative Dinner show, the artists concoctions are heavy with commentary about our near-eugenic obsession with selective breeding. When it comes to sperm donor banks, we’re hurtling towards the Gattica future.

Last time, Nourry cooked up a prenatal buffet. Now she’s cooking up controversy.

Currently at the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris, the glass-eyed bronze goes to India in September. They’ve got a self-inflicted female birth deficit over there while cows are sacred mother-figures (Gau Mata). “Holy Daughter” points out that girls will eventually grow up to have people udders and working ovaries, so maybe they can come in handy too.

Prune Nourry’s “Procreative Dinner” art show in Geneva has a video. Commenting on the ominous clinical trends of artificial breeding, the artist teamed up with a chef étoilé and a scientist to serve children à la carte. Watch the be-scrubbed diners go eagerly at the in vitro culinary feast, syringing their drinks and spooning up eugenically-selected ovarian treats.

With the assistance of six “nurses,” the diners, outfitted with hospital scrubs, made menu choices illuminating their preferences for a non-defective baby. Along with the dinner, Nourry unveiled an exhibition of her sculptures and light box displays that’s on view at Geneva’s Espace R.
