Tomorrow night, we’re hosting a screening for #whilewewatch, a documentary directed by Kevin Breslin, that looks into Occupy’s beginnings and focuses on the role new media has played in shaping the movement. There will also be a panel discussion after and we’d like to invite the first 20 readers who want to attend to RSVP here for one entry plus a guest.
Meet our new Managing Editor. His name is Joel Johnson and he’s “done many things,” from editing major sites (like Gizmodo and Kotaku) to flat-out launching others (Boing Boing Gadgets, Off World, and Consumerist). And now he’s down with us. Shit’s epic. Joel will be disinfecting himself over the next two weeks and then he’ll get started doing something. As he told me earlier, “Whatever we do, we’re going to do it very loud!” Boom. (Photo: provided by Joel Johnson)
With Christmas falling on a Sunday and virtually all of New York City taking off on Monday, today was light but we’ll be back in full effect tomorrow. (Photo: ANIMALNewYork)
Our beloved art editor, Marina, was hit by a car on Wednesday night and sent flying through the air. She’s currently recuperating at the scariest hospital in all of NYC, but is expected to be discharged later this afternoon, which is great news, because we already miss her!
Requiem for a Dream director Darren Aronofsky was tapped for The Meth Project’s aggressive TV campaign to, as per Agency Spy’s guess, “scare children to the point that they will never want to leave the house again.” You know some ba-a-ad stuff’s about to happen to this chick. Read more »
As the Republicans call it, to everyone else, it’s Labor Day aka the “workingmen’s holiday.” It was first celebrated on Sept. 5, 1882 by the Central Labor Union and other trade organizations whose defiant members paraded through the streets of Manhattan. But only after a marching band was found, otherwise it could have erupted into Riot Day. In observance of this sacred tradition that’s been recognized as a national holiday since 1894 (and the fact that most of you aren’t in front of computers), we’ll be taking the day off. As we mentioned back in July, we’re ramping shit up and that not only means more writers and artists, but also… INTERNS. We’re looking for one film and one journalism intern to work with us. The only real requirements are that you’re an enrolled student, can work at least 2 full days per week, and have some skills. You’ll receive credit, a weekly travel stipend and possibly, some internet fame. Interested? Email Laura with the subject “ANIMAL interns.”
ANIMAL, Now 1000% More Professional

We have some big news to announce today. ANIMAL will no longer operate on sweaty vapors alone – we’ve gotten ourselves a partner. Mother New York will be providing us with support and creative resources that will finally give us a chance to become the ghetto CNN we’ve always aspired to be. So, what does this mean for our readers? Read more »
A federal holiday whereby the nation honors its fallen veterans by driving cars, barbecuing shit, and going to the beach. We’ll be back in action on Tuesday. (Photo: Takeshi Yamada/flickr)
PSA Could Double As a Protest Poster

As we mentioned yesterday, Assemblywoman Grace Meng introduced legislation that would stop the NYPD from leaving bags stuffed with valuables lying around public places, giving this latest “See Something, Say Something” PSA all new meaning. Behold the unofficial anti-Operation Lucky Bag campaign.
