Bambi and Dates Served Up on Saddam Plates

Park Avenue restaurant Autumn, has been doing an artist chef collaboration over the past few months, which is nothing new in the restaurant world. However, their latest partnership with chef Kevin Lasko and artist Michael Rakowitz is destined to get some attention.

Not because of the food (venison and dates), but because it’s served on plates looted from Saddam Hussein’s palaces. Here’s a snippet from the press release:

As symbols of the past, they represent the rich and complicated history of a place long misunderstood by its invaders. With over 627 varieties of dates grown in the country, the date is to Iraq as a cigar is to Cuba, or Champagne to France.

The name of the dish is “Spoils”, though we think it could have also been called “Booty”, and it’s there till November 26. If you enjoyed playing poker with your Iraq War cards this one’s for you.

Here’s the first ridiculous image of Sacha Baron Cohen as a character loosely based on Saddam Hussein in The Dictator. How loosely? That’s a Muammar Gaddafi suit, which gives Cohen a wider range of Muslim nations to indelicately mock. Inspired by Hussein’s “own” (ghostwritten) propaganda novel Zabibah and the King, the film dumps its poor-peasant-wife-Iraq raped by husband-USA metaphor. Instead, the dictator comes to New York to fall in love. Hilarity presumably ensues. Wait, wasn’t that Borat? See “the dictator” secretly replaced by a lookalike goat herder so he can emigrate and romance the perky, blond goof Anna Farris in theaters May 2012.

Rummy Ignores Saddam’s Nostalgic Evilness

Donald Rumsfeld has a book out so he has been hitting the media circuit, including an appearance on the Daily Show last night. In the extended interviews posted online, Jon Stewart lukewarmly grills him on the decision to invade Iraq and he shot back that the “world is a better place” without Saddam Hussein and therefore he can’t be too mad at that war, adding, he was a “brutal dictator.” Which is as true now as it was when Rumsfeld shook hands with him in 1983 as a special envoy to the Middle East.

So, looks like Sacha Baron Cohen is starring in a film version of Saddam Hussein’s novel Zabibah and the King, an allegorical and tender ditty wherein the King (Saddam) falls in love with Zabidah the peasant (the Iraqi people) who gets abused and raped by her husband (the invading US forces) and then dies on Jan. 17 (date of US’s first aerial bombardment of Baghdad in 1991). Hollywood’s The Dictator (because he was a dictator) adaptation will be overseen by Borat and Brüno director Larry Charles. So… it’s going to be funny?

GOTT IN HIMMEL! I guessing that’s what Hitler screamed whenever he shot his load (here’s what his sperm may have looked like) on Eva Braun’s ass…Anyway! Hot chicks always go for bad boys, right? To raise awareness for AIDS and the upcoming World AIDS day (December 1st), Germany’s das comitee produced these dirty despot posters. Hopefully the ad agency didn’t do the tacky thing and also sign the public versions of them. Hitler and Saddam look relatively authentic, but, uh, that Photoshopped Stalin isn’t even close to accurate. The ads direct you to this scary red-hued website where a counter shows the current AIDS death number—a number that ticks up every fifteen seconds. Artist Continues To Populate ‘Great Dictators’

Mao Zedong was the latest addition to Italian-based artist Andy Ventura’s colorfully illustrative and informative series of tyrants he aptly titled “The Great Dictators.” The cruel Chinese icon joins the ranks of Slobodan MiloÅ¡eviÄ‡, Joseph Stalin, Adolf Hitlter and a whole host of other mega-serial killers.
