Smart Car Ads As Cute As A Bug’s Ear

We’ve seen some terrible car ads lately. Abominable even. But, my goodness, this a gorgeous new campaign by BBDO NY. Click the gallery, and ooh and aah at the graphic layouts that are an art director’s wet dream. That marshmallow is so fucking sweet looking! And apparently, the Smart Car is “tougher than it looks,” though its EPA mileage estimates are pretty damn unimpressive for such a fucking TINY vehicle. And I can’t help but imagining, “Tridion Safety Cell” skeleton or not, anything bigger than a Big Wheel crashes into you, and you’re flying though the air like a fucking cannonball. Still, pretty ads. |Images via: IBIA|

Visionaire Makes Extra Eco-Unfriendly Magazine

After putting 56 issues in print, Visionaire is finally going digital, but you won’t find it online. Continuing it’s expensive and limited edition tradition, the art and fashion magazine’s 57th issue, “2010,” is a plug-in high definition display that doubles as a daily calendar of art. Produced in collaboration with Smart Car, the $300 electricity-hungry issue will be released in October in an edition of 4000 copies.

Car Slightly Bigger Than A Golf Cart Wins Efficiency Award

Here’s a shocker. The teeny 70hp Smart Car, which is great for finding parking in the city that not even a Mini could, but terrible when it comes to getting squashed on the BQE like a bug, has been rated the most fuel efficient, all gas powered vehicle in the EPA’s annual report (PDF). The 8 ft. long, non-hybrid, two-seater achieves 33 city/41 highway mpg. But despite it’s tiny size, the car only placed 5th overall for fuel efficiency, with HEVs and other alternate technologies ranking higher.
