Estimates for rebuilding the World Trade Center complex are now at $14.8 billion, which is almost $4 billion more than what was proposed in 2008. In addition to burning through cash, the authority has a terrible habit of accumulating lots of debt. It’s basically Frank Gallagher from Shameless. (Photo: ANIMALNewYork)

Lead developer Larry Silverstein says he hasn’t been able to find tenants to commit and is considering a design that would cap the building at 7 stories, which is 73 less than originally proposed. Additionally, it would be repurposed for retail and not office space, effectively turning one of the key structures of the WTC complex that could’ve brought some honor back to Lower Manhattan’s battered skyline into the Ground Zero Mall.

According to engineers, this particular piece of steel took a direct hit from one of the planes that crashed into the buildings.

Although most of the columns were quickly carted away and recycled after the September 11th attacks—to the consternation of experts hoping to examine them long before the so called “Truther” movement began—a certain amount of the beams were preserved and distributed to communities throughout the country. The library is scheduled to open in 2013, but there’s still no word on whether the notorious “Reading Mastery” workbook (which includes “The Pet Goat”) will make it into the collection or where the iconic “Mission Accomplished” banner will hang.

However, as noted by Streetsblog, the tabloid did exactly that and for their latest propaganda piece, “plays the 9/11 card” in arguing against the development of the Battery Park Bikeway.

The tabloid is apparently upset that the WTC’s iconic ‘Sphere’ would be relocated along with other monuments as part of the Parks Department’s redevelopment plan, that includes a crucial bike lane connecting the Hudson River Park Bikeway and the East River Esplanade. Oh the horror. Even if you disagree vehemently with the Post, you have to hand it to them for being so committed. On the upside: At least they didn’t call it the Ground Zero Bike Lane.

Founded by extremist Christian radical Pat Robertson, the ACLJ claims the city should have granted landmark status to the building where the proposed Islamic center will be built. A Manhattan judge will hear their ridiculous arguments on Tuesday.
