Teen Might Do Life In Prison Over Hash Brownies

May 20, 2014 | Sophie Weiner

Nineteen-year-old Jacob Lavaro from Round Rock, Texas, is being charged with a first degree felony for selling hash brownies. If convicted, he faces five years to life in prison. In Texas, getting caught selling hash oil comes with a much harsher penalty than regular pot, and somehow, this allows officials to charge Lavaro for the full weight of the brownies, as if they were made entirely out of hash. The total comes to about 1.5 pounds.

Nothing about this story makes sense: why hash is a felony while weed is a misdemeanor, how it’s possible to charge him for possession of exponentially more drugs because of the non-drug ingredients, how five years to life is the sentence in the first place. “That’s higher than the punishment range for sexual assault, higher than the punishment range for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. It’s kind of crazy,” Jamie Spencer of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws told KUTV.com.

Lavaro has yet to be brought to court, so there’s still hope the whole thing could go away.
