Look at the First Website Ever

April 30, 2013 | Kyle Chayka

One of the first websites ever to be created has been restored to its original state today. Although the website was initially launched by CERN sometime in 1991, it was on April 30th, twenty years ago today when CERN made the decision to make “WWW” technology available to everyone on a royalty-free unrestricted basis. Happy 20th Birthday, Website!

This decision was not made easily. At the time, everyone was looking for a way to monopolize the internet as a private service, much unlike the ever-changing ubiquitous network that we depend on so much today.
