The Guggenheim’s Anonymous ’70s Meatpacking District Footage Is Beautiful

August 22, 2013 | Kyle Chayka

Recently, the Guggenheim Archives had a screening of unlabeled 8mm films from their massive collection. The eye-opening, short, hazy vignettes of Manhattan’s Meatpacking District show workers go about their day, accompanied by clips of trash and other ephemera surrounding the area, as well as some shots of the subway as it once was.

Commenters on the Guggenheim’s blog have dated this found footage to sometime on or around August 16th of 1973–– however, the source of this short film  is currently unknown.
