Total Strangers Jumped from the George Washington Bridge Within Seconds of Each Other

March 5, 2015 | Prachi Gupta

In a fucked up coincidence that highlights how bad it’s gotten over at the George Washington Bridge, two strangers at different places jumped from the bridge within one minute of each other. Police say that the two men did not know each other and had nothing in common aside from the time they committed suicide, which was around 4:20 PM Wednesday.

The New York Daily News reports:

The first victim pulled his Toyota Sienna over on the Manhattan-bound side of the lower level, exited his vehicle and jumped from the bridge, horrified witnesses told Port Authority cops.

Just afterwards, a second man riding his bike on the upper level pedestrian path stopped his bike and leaped over the rail.

Over the past four years, suicides on the bridge — which has no fence or netting — have spiked. WNYC reported in January that someone attempts suicide on the looming structure every 3.5 days.
