The Häagen-Dazs Bee-Boys

This is just so sappy sweet, it's hard to "diss" it. Hit play, and step inside the jive hive to watch about a dozen Bee-Boys breakdance to a Beestie (sorry) Boys-esque track laid down by DJ Honey. HD (that's their street name) is steppin' all over Ben & Jerry's iizzle with this helpthehoneybees cause marketing effort. As you might have suspected, this isn't completely altruistic buzz by HD; the campaign is also serving as a launch for a new flavor, Vanilla Honey Bee. But the Site is fairly informative, telling us that more than 25 % of the Western bee population has disappeared over the last few years, and that honey bees are "responsible for pollinating one-third of all the foods we eat, including many of the ingredients that define our all-natural ice creams." HD says they'll "donate money" in support of bee and pollination research programs when you buy one of their 12 "bee-dependent" flavors. They of course don't say how much money. One creative nit: How could you (ad agency Goodby Silverstein & Partners) NOT name the DJ Honey COMBS?

Vanilla Honey Bee is, in fact, a resurrection of Honey Vanilla, which they discontinued sometime in the late 80s. The first time I saw that stuff in the freezer, I nearly lost it. I loved that flavor, and I was overjoyed to see it return.

Oh dear lord why did you have to tell me that. Haagen Dazs Honey Vanilla was my favorite flavor ever. If it has come back I can say hello to the weight I've lost since the late 80s. Bad bad bad news for my waistline.

It's odd - don't you think - that nearly all of those rapping, hip hop bees (including the DJ) are white...
