Weed Is Highly Profitable

November 7, 2014 | Bucky Turco

In the past few years, there has been a tidal shift in how America feels about weed. More and more
people are steadily getting behind the idea of ending Prohibition II, and despite a historically low turnout during the midterm elections, two more states plus Washington, D.C., voted to legalize cannabis for recreational use. What’s motivating voters (and politicians) to adopt such a progressive stance?

Are citizens finally disillusioned by decades of government propaganda? Has the racial disparity in the criminal justice system finally reached its tipping point? Do communities think police resources could be better well spent?

A new infographic by Information Is Beautiful suggests there may be a much simpler (and greener) explanation: it all comes down to money. When you compare the margins on pot — which is still considered an illegal substance — to other crops, it’s pretty clear which is the most profitable. Hint: it ain’t tomatoes.
