Who Wants to Lick an 800-Year-Old Glacier?

06.11.13 Marina Galperina

You can’t.

“I want to lick that,” should not be the first thing that comes into your head upon viewing of Your Waste of Time, an immersive installation by Olafur Eliasson at MOMA PS1’s “EXPO 1: New York” exhibition. When you visit the chilled exhibit room powered by solar panels, walking between 800-year-old hunks of Vatnajökull, Iceland’s largest glacier, you should be all like:

The physical experience of centuries-old ice from the glaciers of Eliasson’s native Iceland makes tangible a history that extends beyond the human life span—time that is measured in thousands of years rather than mere decades.

You should not be all like, “I want to make the world’s rarest slushy.” You’re the reason the planet’s going to Hell.
