July 31, 2013 | Andy Cush

Jamel Shabazz: Street Photographer is the the latest film from Wild Style director Charlie Ahearn. The aptly entitled documentary offers a glimpse into the life of Shabazz, a notable photographer who’s well known for his unique stylings of subjects and the access he was able to achieve while documenting old school NYC street culture.

ANIMAL spoke to Ahearn about the documentary at his Tribeca studio. We also interviewed stalwart graffiti artist CHINO BYI to discuss his relationship to Shabazz’s photos, many of which speak personally to him, having grown up amongst many of the people–a motley crew of of b-boys, graffiti writers, and stick-up-kids–shot by the photographer.

Jamel Shabazz: Street Photographer will screen at BAM Rose Cinemas Aug 2-8.
