Listen to Artist Dinos Chapman’s Electronic Music

February 20, 2013 | Marina Galperina

Hey, Dinos. Didn’t you promise the sounds of “a naked mole-rat plucked untimely from its snuggly basement-burrow, on its back, all squirmy, exposed to the sun’s dissecting rays” with “the industrial pulse of T/G, wilful experimentation of Stockhausen and impish playfulness of Squarepusher, but sounds like none of them.”

It sounds like none of them. From Dinos Chapman of the successfully transgressive artist brother-duo Jake and Dinos Chapman… Here’s some Luftbobler.

Sounds like a Warp-ish 90s IDM track, which is just the kind of “experimental ambient electronic noise” you’d imagine Dinos tinkering with for the last 10 years in his basement, mid bouts of insomnia. You know, when he’s not adding “God’s cock” to a sequel of the Chapman bros’ gigantic, heart-wrenching Fucking Hell death camp installation or drawing clowns on Goyas and painting rainbows and butterflies on Hitler’s water colors.

There’s also this song, complete with glitchy video. It’s not bad.

Look, if his music sounded like what the Chapman brothers’ art felt like, it would sound like Throbbing Gristle.

The main point is “I find it easier to talk about music than art,” Chapman tells the Guardian, “because I don’t have to take into consideration what Jake might think. You know – it’s mine. It’s quite liberating… I put a bit of paint on a canvas and Jake tells me immediately that it’s the wrong colour, or the wrong shape, and then we argue about it and someone wins and it changes and, you know, it’s how language is formed. You can’t form language with one person.”

But you can make IDM.
