ANIMAL’s feature Artist’s Notebook asks artists to show us their original “idea sketch” next to a finished piece. This week, net artist Emilie Gervais traces the creation of her “Gendered HTML Collection”, even though most of her production is deleted after its “processed” or “mutated into something else.”

My sketchbook is my internet connection =^.^= Most of my notes are online.

I sometime use TextEdit or other software applications, but barely. I dislike having stuff on my desktop. Also, lost folders and files on my computer; so I mostly just contextualize directly everything on the web, or just think stuff through without taking notes, without sketching anything.

The way I use the internet allows me to process my thoughts accurately: ideas as content are organized spontaneously on social media platforms, dead forums, random websites, lost urls, important e-mails, in more or less hidden directories, in source codes or elsewhere.

It goes from being very chaotic to very methodical. My thought process mostly occurs publicly ✌⊂(✰‿✰)つ✌

I made on a sunny day in Aix-en-Provence: it was during a period of time in which people were tweeting a lot aboutart & gender, gendered art and discussing the feminization of culture ٩(^‿^)۶ is a website inviting people to upload their .html pages as girl art or boy art.

All elements displayed on the .html pages must be hosted elsewhere on the internet. is a Gendered HTML Collection.

A couple of days after the website was ready, but the collection still empty; Jennifer Chan tweeted “Postgender Pavilion 3013” I replied: (∩`-´)⊃━☆゚.*・。゚

From there, people started uploading their .html pages.

See work by Emilie Gervais in upcoming shows Uniforum: A Place of Nonconsequence at the the University of Maryland and #404 Not Found in Chicago.
