Did Florida Just Outlaw Computers?

If you’re in the sunshine state, they may be coming after you as you read this. Thanks to a scandal over gambling in internet cafes that led to the resignation of Florida Lieutenant Governor Jennifer Carroll, a clumsily worded new law may have accidentally banned all computers, smartphones, and any other devices that connect to the internet. The legislation, designed to quell online gambling, “defines illegal slot machines as any ‘system or network of devices’ that may be used in a game of chance.” That is to say, anything that could get you hooked up to a game of online poker, regardless of whether or not you actually decide to play. Incredible Investments, LLC, an internet cafe that gives internet access to migrant workers, was forced to shut down under the law, and is now suing the state, asserting that the law “in a frenzy fueled by distorted judgment in the wake of a scandal.”
