Discovery: New Record For World’s Deepest Living Fish

December 19, 2014 | Rhett Jones

The Mariana Trench is the deepest place on earth, reaching a full seven miles below sea level. For a long time scientists believed the furthest regions of the trench were too harsh for life to exist, but it turns out life will find a way and this snailfish is the deepest living creature ever discovered.

Living at a depth of 8,145 meters, the snailfish “is unbelievably fragile, with large wing-like fins and a head resembling a cartoon dog,” according to a statement released by researchers.

You can see it in the video above which was shot by a team of Scottish scientists while they were on a 30-day research exhibition.
