Google is very evil. It’s involved in all kinds of things that give one pause and they grow dark octopus tentacles into more areas of everyone’s life all the time. But damn, it does cool stuff that few companies could ever afford. Case in point: going to space.
The search-engine titan has just signed a 60-year lease to take over part of Moffett Field Naval Air Station. The thousand-acre site will be used for “research, development, assembly and testing in the areas of space exploration, aviation, rover/robotics and other emerging technologies,” according to a company statement.
While Google tends to take its time on many extremely ambitious projects, the fact that it has agreed to a $1.16 billion lease definitely indicates that the company is quite serious about whatever it specifically wants to do there.
NASA will continue to use its Ames Research Center, located on the base, but Google will be taking over a lot of maintenance duties that eat up the space agency’s ever-dwindling budget. Oh, and Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page are using the runways to store their private jets.
