Preview Sweet Toof’s “Dental Deviance” at Pandemic Gallery

December 11, 2014 | Bucky Turco

Sweet Toof, a London-based artist and “GRAFFOHOLIC,” is exhibiting legal work at PANDEMIC on Friday. Billed as the “highest authority in dental deviance,” the semi-anonymous artist will be “showing paintings, sculpture, installation and more” according to the Brooklyn gallery. Derailed represents Sweet Toof’s second solo show in New York City.

Known for painting pink fleshy gums and bright white chompers (sometimes accentuated with gold) on everything from freight trains to walls to rooftops and abandoned warehouses, he also does a fine job when he dabbles in the fine arts. ANIMAL got a sneak preview of the show and after some teeth-pulling, a short Q&A, too.

Why the name Sweet Toof, did you your parents never take you to the dentist or something?
Always had a thing for teeth since a shark bit through my wet suit.

Having said that, how are your teeth? Do you floss?
I have dentures.

Why do you do what you do?
For the adventure.

Do you consider yourself a street artist or a graffiti artist? Or are both those terms just a game of semantics?
I’m a GRAFFOHOLIC.

What’s the best thing about painting in New York City?
Love the history, rooftops ad freight trains.

How different is the work you do in the street compared to what you put in a gallery?
Oil paint takes too long outdoors. The street fuels the gallery work.

Who’s worst: George Bush or Tony Blair?
I love George Bush paintings. He’s a great artist. Who’s Tony Blair?
