The iconic Magic Eye posters were in every mall in America in the ’90s, infuriating those who couldn’t see them and making those who could look stupid, crossing and un-crossing their eyes for around a decade. Then suddenly they just were gone. But now, thanks to web designer Ian Pierce, anyone can make their own Magic Eye straight in their favorite web browser. According to Pierce’s website “technically, it generates single-image random dot stereograms, or SIRDS.” For all intents and purposes, though they’re Magic Eyes.
For now, the options available to users are a simple drawing tool in three sizes and a few different shades of grey, but Pierce has made the code available for developers who want to tinker with it. Please, someone figure out a way to make Magic Eye animated GIFs.
For those who’ve never been able to see the hidden image, this might be the perfect opportunity to make one and tell others that you know what it is. Click through the gallery above see some that we made.
